Full Version: Serious problem: wood chewing

Eight-month-old Sophie has recently started chewing wood. We weren't that distressed by the missing corner on the bathroom cabinet, nor did I freak over the corner of the stair railing. I didn't even get upset when she chewed Grandma (picture frame!) But wait until DH finds out she ate three corners of his antique pendulum clock which didn't get hung up yet from our move. I don't even want to be in the same country.

Has anyone else encountered this behavior? Does anyone know a good antique restoration facility in south central PA?!

Thanks for your input.

Capone is a wood chewer. I keep spraying Bitter Apple on the coffee table because that's his favorite piece of furniture to chew. He's the most destructive of all my three cats, but he's still young and I'm hoping he'll outgrow it.

How old is Capone?
I've read most kittens teethe at 4-6 months, but Ragdolls mature slower. Do they teethe later?

Since I wasn't expecting her to chew any of the things she did, never knew cats to chew wood to begin with, I don't even know where to begin spraying the bitter apple.
Capone will be one-year in April. He's my rescue wannabe Raggie - but he weighs more than Dillinger or Maggie. My vet thinks he's mostly Ragdoll - I just think he's adorable and he gets away with just about anything and everything, but I doubt he's mostly Ragdoll. He flops, he chirps, he fetches for hours, and he's a pain the rear to Maggie. I need to get some recent pictures of him.

For an eight month old, I would suspect teething. However, some cats like to bite things - cardboard and paper being good examples. Not sure how to stop it other than keeping the target material away from the teeth or making it unattractive with mint extract or some other repellant.
Try some bitter apple on the surface of the wood, it'll likely discourage kitty from chewing it.

I know that it sounds like one of those nutty ideas, but try some chewtoys for dogs!! It might actually help, especially if you load it with treats that kitty likes.
Thank you all for the input. I really wondered about the teething, since I keep hearing that Ragdolls mature later than other cats. Sophie is our first Ragdoll and she has been a real education so far.

I'm really grateful for this forum, since the Meezer was poor training for this!

I guess I just have to coat every wooden corner in the house with the bitter apple until she gives this up. Somewhere around here is a puppy-sized Kong, I'll try that, too.

Oh, and "Daddy" survived the trauma of the damaged clock relatively well. Guess he's wrapped pretty tightly around those little white mittens, huh?

I'm not too tech savvy, but I have to learn how to post a picture so you can see who I'm up against!
