I am confused about something...my boyfriend's cat, Lilly is in heat and she is driving me, Sebastian, and Pixie crazy. What I am confused about is this...Sebastian is neutered but every once in awhile he mounts Lilly and seems to be mating with her. He is on top of her, biting her scruff, and doing the motions of mating. Is this just instinct? I did not think that if he is neutered he would get these urges. Lilly seems to be excited afterwards and it seems to calm her down for bit. Poor Pixie is feeling the wrath of Lilly. Lilly is being so mean to little Pixie...growling, hissing, hitting and biting her. Is this because they are both females and since Lilly is in heat she is competing with Pixie? I have asked my BF to get her spayed but he has been putting it off for some unknown reason. I will be getting Pixie spayed within the next couple of months so I will not be going thru the same issues with her. I do not think Sebastian could handle another female in heat.
My neutered boy that I used to have (he was indoor/outdoor) used to try and mount the females in heat also - so think that's just a natural urge. But for goodness sake, please get your BF cat spayed too. They say it is very difficult on the cat to be in heat and not mated and actually have the risk of getting and infection in their uterus.
Get her spayed. Whole females not bred are at high risk of ovarian cysts and other life threatening problems - and you do not want a litter of moggies.

Neutered cats, male and female, will mount other neutered cats, male and female. It means nothing and is most often play or dominance. A neutered male is even more likely to mount a whole female in heat, since she seeks it - any port in a storm.
A female cat that goes in heat too often can actually get pyrometrea (sp) it's a infection of the uterus which they can die if not treated.
She needs to be spayed asap

a male can mount even though he's neutered how long has he been neutered?

I agree with all of you...she needs to be spayed. I have tried talking to him about getting it done but he just puts it off.
Sebastian has been neutered for as long as I have had him. The woman I got him from never sent me all his vet papers so I am not sure at what age he was neutered.
Why not take Lilly in when Pixie is done?
Make getting her spayed a gift to your BF for valentines!!
He is nervous about taking her in. Its major surgery so he is worried something will happen to her. I have offered to take her myself. That's his baby.
There are risks of surgery, but he is not recognizing that there is greater medical risk to her as a whole female, particularly one not being bred. She may also start to spray and it is always better to avoid that starting for fear it will not be easy to stop.
I have had a cat get closed pyo, so I do know how awful it can be on the cat. She was doing fine, and then started to fall downhill quickly. It was quite a surprise to find out that she had pyo, and it was a severe case. She was hospitalized for over a week, as the vet cut out the infected and dead tissue. She was only 13 months of age, and by what my vet said, she had had it for awhile. I felt awful we didn't catch it earlier, but she was fine, and then stopped drinking and started to become dehydrated, that is the only reason we caught it when we did. After that, I have probably become overcautious about pyometra.
This past year I had to go against what I have always said about waiting until a cat is at least 12 months of age to breed, as I had a girl go into many heat cycles and her last was a continuous heat cycle, it was so strong and I really was unsure of what to do. I contacted a breeder I trusted, as well as my vet, and contacted a vet via email that is a feline specialist in reproduction, and was told, despite her age to breed her. She was only a little over 10 months of age. She had a beautiful litter of 6, and an excellent Mom, she is now being bred for her second time, and she has had an 11 month break since her last breeding.
I hope that you can convince your boyfriend of the importance of her spaying.
Yes, I also have had altered males and females mount, I also agree it is sometimes play and sometimes over dominance.
