Hi Everyone,

Well we picked up our new kitty on Monday - 12 1/2 week old Sealpoint, and I am in Love. He's adapting quite well. I have not cut his nails yet, as I am a little apprehensive, having not done it before. I will learn. He's trying to pull himself up our legs, and ouch, it hurts. It's cute, and when his nails are cut, is this acceptable behavior?? It probably sounds like a silly question, and I'm sure there will be more to follow - ha ha

Thank you.

Marilyn
Congratulations. No. You do not want him to climb people. Just pick him up when he does it. As he gets bigger he will be less inclined anyway. Clipping his claws will not only cause less hurt, but also will make him less inclined to do it. Just snip the very end of the claw and do not go too far down and you will find it is easy. Manipulating the paw and exposing and inspecting the claws when you are just cuddling the kitten will make it easier when it comes time to clip. Do not assume you need to get them all done at one time. You can do one or two and then others later. Do not forget the dew claw. You may find this video helps.

That's a great video Jan - wish I had seen that when I first got my girls and was concerned about trimming their claws. Only thing they don't show is how to manage all that fur around the toe to find the claw!!
Thank you soooooooooooo much. You guys are the Best.

Teresa, how do you find the claw???? Wow, it's not easy, is it..
You trap the fur underneath using the finger that will be under the toe to express the claw. You start with the finger against the foot starting in front of the toe and sweep the finger under the toe, bringing the excess fur with it to be held down underneath and away from the claw.
Or, you can do it my way and just keep digging around in the fur for it!! Smile

One person with a raggie said that she dipped the paw in warm water to get the fur wet so it "got out of the way". I haven't tried that yet....
