Our boy "Fred" a blue point male will be 8 months old next week, he weighs a liitle over 11 pounds. Fred is very active, eats well, plays etc. but we have some issues that we were just wondering if they are normal kitten type things. First of all this guy has several (3-5)BMs every day, formed and not loose, is this normal? We had a 17 year old boy Clark pass away this past summer and he was a once or twice a day guy for years. The other problem we have is Fred seems to get a fair amount of BM on him, some times he can clean himself up but most times my wife and I need to do "clean up". Having never had a long hair cat before this is all new to us and honestly we are hoping it is a "kitten" thing. We have even thought about having the hair on his backside cut short to see if that would help.
I wish I could say that poop on the butt was a "kitten" thing, but one of my girls is 4 years old and we still have problems with her. I had her down last night cutting it out of her britches and just went ahead and gave her a haircut while I was at it. She can go weeks with no problem, then suddenly, it's like, here we go again - but I think it's where her fur grows out again. As for how many times, I guess it depends on how much he eats, and as long as it's well formed I wouldn't be too concerned. With my girls, it's like once a day.
That is a large number of litter visits, but that is not necessarily an indication of a problem. I would mention it at the next vet visit, but would not take him in just for that.

Longhaired cats, particularly young ones, can have stool soft enough to stick. The first thing to do is just carefully trim the fur that gets dirty and see if that is enough.
Last night my little boy got some on his bottom but also luckily for me he stood in it as well so unfortunately i had to stick his paw uder the water because it was all between his toes so it wasnt fun for either of us.
I was actually thinking about bringing this up as well because he does the same thing, going several times a day but formed and honestly I have never seen a kitten or cat so fussy about the burying, he will spend ages covering it with ALL the litter in his box so there is a big pile in one corner and then he gets the lining in his claws and pulls that over too, its pretty funny and completely opposite to my last kitten (she couldnt bury at all and wouldnt jump out of the litterbox after doing her business and dig on the floorboards trying to cover lol she never figured it out)
I have been a bit concerned lately that if noone is home for the whole day and he does that back Im not there to put the lining back, dig out his poop and smooth the litter back over that he wont go in there if he needs to go again because otherwise he would be sitting on a big pile of litter and lining so he might go elsewhere, should i start taking him out of the litter tray after he has buried it enough to try and stop this or just let him go with it?
We have found the linings are more trouble than they are worth.
