I've decided that it's not worth stressing him out over this litter box thing. I've put down two very thick beach towels on the sofa. He uses it, I toss it into the wash and replace it with two additional fresh towels. Lucky for me he only uses it once a day.
He's happy and I'm ok that he lets me live in his world.
