hi everyone...
some of you may have read the thread on the new kitten Henry going to the vet. I took him on Thursday because he was doing a lot of sneezing. They tested him for worms, wormed him (even tho test was negative), tested him for felv/fiv all came out negative. They did say he had a URI and gave him clavamox. That was thursday morning. He seemed to be getting better...even wanting to play here and there. Not quite full of energy...but better. I have been keeping him in a seperate room away from the other cats.
I came home tonight and now his congestion actually seems worse and his one eye looks runny. makes a horrible sound like he is all congested when he sneezes. at least I think it is a sneeze. I thought he would be doing much better by today but that dosent seem to be the case. could this just be a case of the viral having to work thru and I need to give it more time? or should I be taking him back? he is eating and drinking and using the litterbox.
That's 3 days. I would think that by now he would be improved. If nothing else, call the vet in the morning and let him know what's going on. Maybe he needs something stronger.
thanks Teresa...I will definitly call in the morning. I put a humidifier in the room so I am hoping that might help. He still makes sure he is sitting with me whenever I am in the room. He is in his own room for a while now. I feel bad keeping him seperate but have to because of the other cats. He really did seem perfectly healthy when I got him.. I dont understand how he got sick. I know I have read that it is fairly common when going to a new home..just dont understand why Sad
Do call the vet. If the discharge is clear, then the infection is probably viral and the meds will not directly help it. You need to support him until he fights it off and using humidity is a good idea if he is congested.
Hi

My new kitten had a sneeze and slightly runny nose when I brought her home. I thought is was allergies to different things in a new house. Well a week later my other cat ended up with a herpes virus which is sore eye, sneezing, chest congestion and temperature. He had caught it off the new kitten. After 2 visits to the vet it turned out okay with the right combination of eye cream and antibiotic paste. I did learn from the experience that with the right medication in the next 24 hours the difference was amazing. Mind you mine did not sound anywhere near as sick as your poor baby. If it is not working by the 3rd day I would take him back as he may need something additional or different.

Let us know how he goes. Good luck

PS I have had to continue my cats meds for an extra week after they got better to stop them reinfecting each other.
Some cats/kittens will stop eating or drinking with an URI, if you are having any issues with that, you may try a wet food, as it has a stronger smell, or placing hot water on his dry food and letting it become moist, he may find the food more appealing. The most important is to make sure he continues drinking, as dehydration can be a problem.
If he is very congested, you may try steaming your shower, and let him breathe in the air to help.
I hope he gets better soon.

thanks Stormi,
I have been paying close attention to his eating and drinking. fortunately he is doing both. his congestion does sound better this morning and his eye dosent seem to be runny at all now. I think the humidifier is helping. we have forced hot air so it an be very dry. esp. if you have any congestion. I will be calling the vet this morning to see what he says. tho.
Have you called the vet? What did he/she say? Hope he's feeling better this morning.
well...of course I called the vet but he is closed on mondays. I did talk to the people that I got him from who of course explained it is common. there was also another person there who adopted a kitten 4 weeks ago. She said the same thing happened and the women there was told to let it run its course. after a little over a week she said the kitten was fine. I am still going to continue the antibiotics like the vet suggested. I figured it was viral and the antibiotics were to keep him from getting any secondary infections. He still comes to sit with me as soon as I come in the room. I think the humidifier is helping too. I did have to wipe his eye 2x today already. I was wondering if I should get some of the l lysine I have read about to help boost his immune system or just give him more time to fight it on his own. any suggestions?

I have been making sure he is eating and drinking which he continues to do both.
From what I understand about L-lysine, is that it does NOT help the immune system, but only helps in the case of the herpes virus.
If it is herpes, there is a medicine called Enisyl-F, (Lysine spelled backwards), but it also has other medications that are supposed to really help those cats/kittens to keep herpes in remission. This is a product my Dad has used with good success.
I agree it is best to keep him on the antibiotic, as you said, to prevent any secondary infections. I would finish the meds and see how he is doing. Of course, any sign of lethargy or resistance to eating or drinking, I would take him to the vet immediately.
It is great that he is still continuing to be active, eating, and drinking.
I hope he is feeling much better soon. Please keep us updated.

Purrs,
Stormi
