Thanks to all for your suggestions. My Oliver has had issues with bladder infections/crystals. We've had every test you can think of, he's just finished another round of antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. He's on a uti prescription cat food currently.

Because he has peed, inappropriately, in various places in the house.....he heals then he thinks it's *fine* to continue to use these places...our bed, our leather sofa & our sunroom chair. While I'm keeping everything covered with loads of towels to catch it....I'm going to have to retrain him to use the litter.

I'm in need of suggestions on how to go about this without causing him stress. He is easily stressed. We have three floors with litter boxes on two floors. He has no issues with litter or the box. He poops fine in them.
It is not unusual for a cat to avoid the box for one use and not the other. This is because one has caused them pain and the other has not. You may also have the problem that he is overmarking old stains, which he would tend to do with urine. For that it takes cleaning each carefully - and perhaps multiple times - with enzymatic cleaners.

I would try making alternative urine boxes as much different as possible, including offering just paper towels or newsprint instead of litter. If you use uncovered boxes, then make these covered, etc. You need to start confining him with both his regular box and the new one to make it more likely he will try.

You are right to avoid any added stress, because that is yet another trigger for litterbox problems.

The best ideas for things to try for litterbox problems are at Tallyville.

I purchased Cat Attrack Litter. He liked the smell in the bag, he liked the smell in the box. He ran downstairs and peed on the sofa, grrrr.

I moved the box into my bedroom, he jumped right in and peed....good job! He's done very well in two weeks, two accidents elsewhere but has been using the box. He only pees there, he poops downstairs.

When I catch him in the box, I give him loads of praise. He's actually done quite well, I'm pleased. He did jump on the bed next to me last week & began to scratch in his favorite spot. I told him to go to the box and he did. Just like he understood me.....
