I just am in shock and cannot, cannot thank God enough.
I live a distance from my family and have a cat sitter come in to check on Pixel this morning as I stayed with my 87 year old father to do things for him. Well, she left the apartment and so did Pixel. My neighbor found her almost out of the building.
Pixel has a collar but I am now thinking of microchipping her as well. My breeder says it could cause cancer but I never, NEVER want an accident to happen again.
What is everyone's thought about microchipping?
We microchip ours. The cancer risk has been investigated and none was found.
All our animals are microchipped. I've never heard of it causing cancer, and it brings us peace of mind. I'd rather my animals be chipped if they somehow get out/run away, so there is a chance they would be returned, rather than it happening and there be no way to identify who they are and where they live.
We got both of ours chipped when they had their spay/neuters. Since our boy, Kai, has been known to door dash, knowing that he's chipped helps.
I would have him microchipped, both my cats and my dog are. I haven't heard about the cancer thing,I'll be interested to see everyone 's view on it though. I'm glad he didn't get to far!
Wow, glad Pixel didn't get far and is home safe. Also, thought about the microchip, but not sure.
Two examples of friends come to mind:
1. You know the story of Buddy, no microchip, but it wouldn't of mattered. HE was hiding close to home, posters, etc. and luckily found by the owners. If someone else had found him, the posters and all would be enough to return him home.
2. Another friend found a little kitten in the backyard, only months old. Being a cat lover and having two Abyssinian cats, he took the kitten to a vet. Yes, it was microchipped and the little one was reunited with the owner, a neighbor two doors down.
I guess the microchip is dependent on who finds them, and whether they would take the time for a vet visit or not. I would also think this would be dependent on the area in which one lives, whether it is a closed community, rural area, or city living. When Buddy got out, everyone said they stay close to home, which he did, as did the little kitten.
But, if someone finds your pet and chooses to make it their own, the microchip would be proof of ownership, as would any theft of your pet also prove.
Cost of microchip is not much in the world of vet visits so that's a non-issue.
Jury is still out for me and just my 2 cents.
I would have done it at spay/neuter but with Louie's hairloss (and allergic skin reaction) I decided against it at that time. Little Icy came to me spayed so I didn't have tha opportunity. I may still have it done, just to be safe.
Thanks all and yes, Pixel I think wanted to get back in.
I am going to have the microchip done. What happens if I move? Can it be reset?
I know now how it felt about Buddy. I trusted this cat sitter as this is her business. I am still in shock how I interviewed and paid this woman well for my cat to be safe and Pixel got out. I know accidents happen and I thank all Above but I will never use her again.
I had a collar for Pixel but I got a bulky nametag. I wanted a smaller tag but now am also getting the microchip.
Again, thank God. I am not angry at the sitter just really disappointed. I have yet to hear from here.
I had Annie chipped just incase she got lost. We travel with her also and I feel better having her chipped incase we had a car accident and somehow she got loose.
The chip has a number code and is registered by you to a company. If your information changes it's up to you update it. Our vet also has the chip number in his records.
